It's 2:23 AM and instead of sleeping or writing like I was supposed to be doing, I did this. I've been meaning to do this for forever but I am lazy. Laaaazzzzyyyy.
But pay close attention and you'll notice every comic on here is a wolf comic. There's a reason for that. I didn't include the comics that I really like, because I'll do that later. I don't so much hate these comics, I have been keeping an eye on most of them, and some of them have redeeming qualities. I was focusing mostly on the stuff I didn't like. Anyone can point out why they like a comic, but are afraid to say what they don't like.
If you're one of the comic artists on this list, this is going to offend you. Sorry. This is my opinion. I'm not shoving it in your face or posting it on your page. Chances are you won't even be reading this because I have no intention and showing it to you. I'm not looking for attention, just for a rant. This is my opinion. If you don't like it, sorry. But there are plenty of people out there who love your work. There can be at least one who doesn't.
Whisper of the Wind: I think one of my major problems with this is it's so jumpy. It goes back and forth between characters, sometimes throwing them in your face and saying "Deal with it". First we have the two dogs (dogs?) then we have some wolves, then a short venue back to the dogs, and then right back the some wolves. Not even the same wolves either, from what I can figure. Not to mention random flash-backs, or are they dialog? I just don't know what's going on. Also, I have a personal bias against any wolf comic that has wolf characters speak in formal dialog. I hate this trend. It's unoriginal, uncreative, and boring. Another of my major bugs is that the art-work can't decide on what it wants to be. And I'm not talking about the random cartoons, although that is worthy of mention. If you look at the earlier clips, not only is it bright, but the style looks very cartoony and very cheesy, like some anime show not worth mentioning. It also over-uses a lot of close ups and strange perspectives. Then the newer page, not only dark, but look more realistic, more serious (more boring). It's a complete style and tone change. As for a plot, I really don't know what's going on. Some stuff happens. It's not very coherent, but it's happening. Now I suppose you could saw "It makes more sense as you go", but after 25 pages you'd think you'd at least have an idea. I thought I knew what was happening before, but now there's some random wolves and political tension. That's where I lost interest.
[link]Wolf Run: It looks pretty. What else do you want me to say? Nothing is happening. One minute there's a wolf on an acid trip. Next it's talking to itself. Then it's hunting. It's gotten a lot of attention lately, but
I'm missing the hype. I'd say that it has potential except, there's no plot yet. Looks pretty though.
[link]Off White: I'm crossing the taboo of reviewing a very popular DA comic. Hell yes. I do read Off White, I like the art work. I like that the authors actually have an idea bout the mythology they're using. However, the mythology has, thusfar, been rather distorted and is kind of misleading for those who don't know Norse mythology. I suppose it may vary depending on your source, but as I remember, Hati and Skoll (sons of Fenrir) chase the chariots of moon and sun (respectively) not because it is their 'divine duty' or anything of that matter, but because they are trying to eat them. Another problem with this work is while it has a plot (no denying it) the story moves rather slow. It seems to have a lot of artistic filler and not enough story. If the comic updated more frequently I could understand this, and I'm not blaming them for having lives. But for as many pages as they have out, I would have liked to see more of a story. I suppose this is more of a personal opinion. My biggest problem of all is the continued message of: Humans are bad. I hate this. This is worse than the formal dialog. It is a horrible cliché that so many animals comics try to pull. All of the humans are heartless hunters who kill animals without any respect to nature. Really? Also, the whole "blue eyes good red eyes bad thing" is ridiculous. I would like to believe that comics have given up this horrible cliché, but it persists, even in Off White. Although it's hands down way better than Black Blood Alliance.
[link]Biohazard: Humans bad. They 'attack without cause', as the comic itself says on page 4. No joke. This comic confuses me. At first I thought I knew what was going on. Then there's, angels and demons? I'm hoping it makes more sense later, because I really like the style of this artist. And I hope it drops the whole "humans are evil" thing, because it seemed really random and doesn't flow with the rest of the story.
[link]Of Paws and Wings: So far, it has two pages. But I HAVE to point this one out. You have to read the first page. It's hilarious. The "Savage Wolves" lead by their "thick headed" leader, and the "Tranquil Dragons" which are a "good natured clan". You guessed it, a war comic. Those are actual quotes to. I'm not making that crap up. The wolves are evil. The dragons are good. Unless this comic pulls a Wurr, it's all downhill from here.
[link]Twilight Spirits: I'll be honest, I'm not even able to read this comic. My eyes hurt when I try. The colors. I could bark about all of the sparkley wolves out there, but you know what? If you want to have a blue wolf, go ahead. Just please don't open up MS Paint and use the default blue. PLEASE add some grey to dull down the brightness. At least try to make it look natural. I never get why the wolves have fancy colors, but just them. Not the deer or the birds or the bears. And it's rarely (if ever explained) But besides that. There's something about the style that's just so
generic. Speaking of generic, there are three evil wolves, each of a solid dark grey with sunken faces and evil looking faces. Yes. I'm serious. Just open up the book of clichés. I believe this artist speaks English for their first language, so there's really no excuse for the horrid dialog and numerous spelling and grammar errors. This comic is more or less pretty generic.
[link]Paradise Lost: I'm just going to say it, because you're all thinking it. It looks like Wolf's Rain. It even sounds like Wolf's Rain. Although it may actually be an allusion to the epic poem of the same name. We'll never know. I actually like the artwork. It's simple. But effective. I think the first thing I need to mention is the sound effects. They. Are. Hilarious. The only person with more humorous sound effects may very well be 'Calvin and Hobbes', or ConcentrationMoon. Sound effects of this comic include: "hiss hiss" (an antelope
in the artic?) "fast runnn", "bounce" (the sound of blood splattering). Although I should note that to the best of my knowledge, English is not their first language. Anyway, one thing that bugs me about the artwork is that sometimes the wolves don't look like they have lower jaws. Their teeth just come out of their throats or something. They also have very pointy teeth. But at least they have gums (although kinda pale) The plot sounds like Wolf's Rain: they need to find paradise. Or else? Anyway, some of the promotional artwork
is weird. It looks like it's for something entirely different. Apparently it will make more sense later. I'm not really sure what's going on in this comic though
lot of action-fighting.
[link]Wolf Song: War. Good vs Bad. Can I just leave it at that? Actually in this case it's "gods vs demons" although why the artist calls them this I'll never know. They're just wolves. Bad guys usually look generic and have solid colors while the main characters have detail and such. Bad idea. Also I think the good guys know Kung Fu or something. Some of the artwork just looks silly, and there's a lot of talking. Sometimes several pages of just talking. The 'wolves' have mutations or whatever, but they're not that original. Multiple tails, fangs, fancy colors, etc. Nothing we haven't seen before.
[link]Wolf's Affinity: It's. So. Silly. Saying that it's "fictional" is no excuse for how devoid of any logic this comic is. I don't see ANY point in using animals if the animals you are using act nothing like they actually word. To sum this up, bears enslave wolves. The bears are fat, sadistic, and evil. The wolves are bright and colorful. There are so many things wrong with this comic. For starters, how are bears even capable of enslaving wolves? Wolves could outrun bears over long distances, they could just leave the forest. The bears aren't tying them down with chains. But fine. If you want, you can have that act of insanity. But why are the bears a clan? They all live together as a group. Bears are solitary animals. Especially males. But so far, the bears have all been males. There's a reason bears are solitary animals, leading us to another fallacy. The ecosystem is a delicate thing. Bears are solitary because a concentration of bears in one area could not survive on the resources available. Nor could there be enough for the bears (who are fat and eat more than they should) and the pack of wolves they are enslaving. Logic FAIL. Animals have to struggle to survive just as they are. The entire basis of the comic is flawed, it lives in clichés, and I've found no redeeming qualities. The end.

And no, I was referring to her plotline. But art critique would be nice, too. c:
I love reading reviews of other comics because the problems that are highlighted help me notice bits in mine that are wrong. xD
Especially the fact that these are wolf comics. I'm also making one (oh shizz more wolves D8 I'm sorry world) but I'm desperately hoping everyone else sees it as I do.
It's a natural one. No unnatural colours, no epic warz.
I hope I get reviews like this when I upload the pages (only got old old old awful crap pages from ages ago).
And it would be lovely to see more natural animal comics, we seem to be lacking in that department.
I've been thinking about in the next journal asking to see if people want their comics to be reviewed. Generally, I don't post a critique that isn't asked for, because I understand that it can be very annoying and very frustrating to see your work torn apart.
